How to get your product recommended by ChatGPT

A practical process for small teams: pick the buyer questions that matter, see who AI assistants recommend today, fix what stops them from reading your page, and publish one clear, fact-checked answer. No tricks, no guarantees, just steps you can measure.

Short answer

Nobody can force ChatGPT to recommend a product. What you can do is (1) make sure search and AI crawlers can read your page, (2) answer the exact buyer question on that page in plain, specific, verifiable words, and (3) be mentioned on the pages assistants already cite. Then re-ask the same questions and compare.

1. Choose 3–5 buyer questions, not keywords

Assistants answer questions like “What’s the best invoicing app for freelancers in the EU?” or “Is there a tool that turns podcasts into short clips without a watermark?”. Write the questions a buyer asks right before choosing. Keep the list short: it is a measurement panel you will re-ask later, not a search-volume estimate.

  • Mix “best X for Y”, “X vs Y”, and “how do I…” questions.
  • Use your buyers’ words, not your feature names.
  • Keep one market and language per panel so answers are comparable.

2. See who gets recommended today

Ask each question several times. Answers vary from run to run, so one screenshot proves little. Record for every answer: was your brand mentioned, was your page cited as a source, and which competitors and pages were cited instead.

Those cited pages are the most useful data you will get. They show what an assistant found convincing: a comparison page, a review site, a docs page, a Reddit thread. Your fix usually lives on your page and on those pages.

3. Remove the blockers before rewriting anything

If a page can’t be crawled or indexed, rewriting it changes nothing. Check, in this order:

  • The page returns 200 and has no noindex (meta tag or X-Robots-Tag header).
  • The canonical URL points at the page itself.
  • robots.txt allows Googlebot and Bingbot, and the answer crawlers you care about: OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User (ChatGPT), PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User. Training bots such as GPTBot can stay blocked without affecting search citations, according to OpenAI.
  • The main copy is in the server HTML, not only rendered by JavaScript.
  • The page is in your sitemap.

4. Answer the question on the page, in specific words

Compare your page with the pages that were cited. Usually the gap is not “more keywords” but a missing, specific answer: who the product is for, what it costs, which platforms it supports, how it compares, what it does not do.

  • Put a direct one- or two-sentence answer near the top, then the detail.
  • Use concrete facts you can stand behind: prices, limits, supported platforms, integrations. Every number must be true and visible on the page.
  • Add an honest comparison or “best for” section if buyers ask comparison questions.
  • Only add structured data (JSON-LD) that matches visible text. Google says its AI features need no special markup beyond normal SEO.

Don’t invent reviews, ratings, customer counts or capabilities. Besides the risk, assistants increasingly cross-check facts across sources.

5. Earn mentions where assistants already look

Look at the third-party pages that were cited in step 2. If a “best tools for X” article cites five competitors and not you, getting a fair mention there (by contacting the author, submitting to the directory, answering the thread) can matter as much as your own page. Keep your name, description and pricing consistent everywhere.

6. Ship one change, then re-ask the same questions

Publish one change at a time and confirm it is actually live (exporting a draft is not publishing). Re-ask the same panel after 7, 14 and 28 days and write down anything else that changed meanwhile. A before/after difference is an observation, not proof; a single run can go either way by chance.

This is the loop Citelane automates: live answers from four assistants, crawler checks, a draft written only from your confirmed facts, a claim check, and a check that the approved words are on your public page. See how it works.

Questions

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. Organic answers aren’t for sale, and any service that promises a guaranteed recommendation is overpromising. You can improve the odds by being crawlable, specific and present on the sources assistants cite.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing results?

ChatGPT search uses its own crawler (OAI-SearchBot) and third-party search providers. Being crawlable and indexed by both Google and Bing is a sensible baseline.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It doesn’t hurt, but no major assistant has confirmed it as a ranking or citation signal. Crawlable, clear HTML matters far more.

How long until changes show up?

OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to be reflected in ChatGPT search. Content changes depend on when the page is recrawled; re-check after one, two and four weeks.
