Why ChatGPT doesn’t mention your brand
Your competitors show up in AI answers and you don’t. Here are the seven causes we see most often, from blocked crawlers to pages that never answer the question, with a concrete way to check each one.

Most often the assistant either can’t read your page (blocked, noindex, JavaScript-only), doesn’t find a direct answer to the buyer’s question on it, or relies on third-party pages that list your competitors but not you. Check those three before anything else.
1. Crawlers are blocked
A robots.txt rule, a CDN bot setting or a firewall can block OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Claude-SearchBot without anyone noticing. Blocking GPTBot (training) is fine for citations; blocking the search and user agents is not.
Check: run the AI crawler checker on the page you expect to be cited.
2. The page isn’t indexed
A stray noindex, a canonical pointing to another URL, or a brand-new page that search engines haven’t discovered yet. Check: Google Search Console’s URL Inspection, and the canonical tag in the page source.
3. The text only exists after JavaScript runs
Many crawlers read the server HTML only. If your main copy is rendered client-side, they see a near-empty page. Check: view the page source (not the inspector) and search for a key sentence.
4. The page never answers the actual question
Homepages often say “the all-in-one platform for modern teams”. A buyer asked “which invoicing app supports SEPA and Xero?”. If your page never says SEPA or Xero in a clear sentence, an assistant has nothing to quote.
Check: ask the question, open the pages that were cited, and list what they state that your page doesn’t.
5. Third-party sources list competitors, not you
Assistants lean on review sites, comparison articles, directories and forums. If those pages never mention you, neither will the answer. Check: look at the cited links in several answers; they repeat more than you’d expect.
6. Your facts are inconsistent
Different prices, names or feature claims across your site, app stores and directories make it harder to describe you confidently. Check: search your brand name plus “pricing” and compare what each source says.
7. You measured once
Answers vary between runs, models and markets. A single “not mentioned” can be noise. Check: ask each question several times on more than one assistant and look at the rate, with its uncertainty, not one answer.

My brand is mentioned but my site isn’t cited. Why?
The assistant found you through other pages (reviews, directories) but didn’t consider your own page the best source for that question. Usually your page lacks a direct, specific answer, or isn’t crawlable by the assistant’s search agent.
Is this the same as SEO?
Largely. Google says its AI features rely on the same fundamentals. The difference is emphasis: direct answers to buyer questions, consistent facts, and presence on the pages assistants cite.
